Menswear has long represented authority and refinement. Today, however, women are borrowing from his wardrobe without following its traditional rules. A white shirt can replace a mini dress. A blazer becomes sensual when worn with bare legs. Denim and leather are softened by crystals and sparkling jewellery.

As Helen Chi demonstrates in this editorial, the secret lies in contrast: strong without appearing rigid, daring while remaining elegant.

1. Make the oversized shirt the main event

A white shirt borrowed from his wardrobe deserves more than a supporting role beneath a blazer. Choose one long and generous enough to become the focus of the outfit.

Helen Chi pairs an oversized white shirt with tall metallic boots, creating a look that feels relaxed yet intentional. When the shirt is voluminous, keep the remaining elements streamlined. A striking pair of boots or one piece of statement jewellery is enough to complete the look.

2. Pay attention to proportion

Wearing menswear does not mean that every piece must be oversized. If the upper half has strong shoulders or a generous cut, balance it with bare legs, gently fitted trousers or tall boots. In these images, the contrast between powerful shoulders and slender legs creates a natural sensuality. It is proportion, not the amount of exposed skin, that gives an outfit its allure.

3. Let different textures speak to each other

Leather, denim and traditional suiting fabrics from his wardrobe often feel structured and substantial. Crystals, metallic finishes and sheer materials introduce lightness and sensuality. Place them together. A leather jacket becomes more intriguing beside sparkling details, while embellished jeans can elevate rugged denim into a fashion statement. Contrasting surfaces also prevent a restrained palette of black, white and blue denim from looking predictable.

4. Use accessories to break the rules

Menswear-inspired pieces can sometimes appear overly formal. Helen Chi disrupts that seriousness with metallic boots, oversized jewellery and light-catching crystals.

There is no need to wear everything at once. Choose one unexpected accessory and allow it to command attention. If the boots are dramatic, keep the jewellery restrained. If the clothing is richly embellished, simpler hair and makeup will maintain the right balance.

5. Dress for your personality, not your gender

The appeal of menswear does not come from copying the way men dress. It comes from the freedom to reinterpret its cuts, proportions and materials. Wear a blazer as a dress, combine an oversized shirt with tall boots or introduce crystals to denim. Borrow from his wardrobe if you wish, but do not borrow its rules. Clothing becomes truly powerful only when the person wearing it feels entirely like herself.
