Most portraits are about holding still. You freeze one moment, and that’s the picture, with a whole life boiled down into a single frame. But a new photo series sets out to capture something harder to pin down: movement, drawing on the artist’s own story of resilience and reinvention.

In these portraits, artist Magdala Joseph exists somewhere between two states. The stillness is interrupted by motion, the present haunted by what came before and what might come next.

Created in collaboration with photographer Stephani Diani, the series explores duality, character and movement through a deliberately restrained visual language. The clothes become extensions of the body and gestures become narrative. Together, they set out to capture not simply what a person portrays, but something harder to hold in a frame: the process of becoming on their own terms.

The idea is central to Joseph’s work. A multidisciplinary artist working across fashion and entertainment, she has appeared on Saturday Night Live and performed onstage at Juilliard. These achievements have come alongside a far less certain journey, navigating an industry built on rejection while, at points, experiencing homelessness and the uncertainty of a pending asylum case in the United States.

The instinct for self-invention began long before Joseph arrived in New York. On Sundays in Cap-Haïtien, she would watch her mother dress in elaborate hats and French-inspired styles for church. At her school, even uniforms carried their own visual codes, each one distinguished by its look. Growing up in Haiti’s northern coastal city, the only nation born of a successful slave revolt, Joseph learned early that appearance could be a form of identity and that being seen could carry power.

Her artistry

That lesson has followed her into her artistry. In this series of photos, Joseph and Diani looked beyond the side of luxury that rarely makes the picture: what happens off-camera and the years that don’t photograph well.

In one, Joseph wears a black Alaïa dress, its sculptural silhouette contouring the body with the precision that became synonymous with the fashion house. It’s a fitting choice for a woman whose own story has been shaped by resisting the confines of circumstance.

Azzedine Alaïa revolutionized form-fitting fashion and became known for celebrating the body. He was fashion’s ultimate rebel, rejecting the traditional industry calendar, advertising and trends, choosing instead to present clothes only when they were completely finished and letting the work speak for itself.

It’s a history that feels apt for Joseph and Diani, whose careers have been built outside the conventional timetable. Diani, a self-taught portrait photographer and director, has spent 25 years building a body of work that spans NBCUniversal and Warner Bros.

Part of the chemistry between Joseph and Diani comes from meeting on opposite sides of the lens. Joseph is building a career in front of it and Diani on the other end. In an industry that often dictates who gets seen and on whose terms, the portraits are controlled spaces where they both reclaim that power, with Joseph deciding how she’s seen and Diani deciding how Joseph is perceived.

The photographs play with that same duality, expressed through colour, silhouette and restraint. For instance, this is a dress by Khaite, a brand known for its Avant guard silhouettes executed with a deeply sensual, feminine ease.

“We wanted to show duality ,” Joseph said of the concept, “while keeping it minimalist.”

That instinct for reinvention is rooted in a life shaped by movement. Growing up in Haiti, Joseph said, creativity was part of the country’s collective memory, while resilience was “a badge of honour” in her family. Moving between three countries taught her to adapt to new cultures while continually reinventing herself.

It is perhaps why she draws inspiration from figures who forged their own paths, from Luciano Pavarotti and Nina Simone to Nelson Mandela, Karl Lagerfeld and Viola Davis, Denzel Washington According to her, what connects them is their refusal to fit neatly into the world around them, and their ability to rise from humble beginnings and excel on their own terms.

Fashion became another way to do the same. According to Joseph, it’s both a language and a kind of armor, which she employs to express her mood, strength and culture.

A precarious moment

Joseph’s control over her own image comes at a moment when Haitians in the US have little control over much else.

Now, as that violence persists, the journey is being reversed. Haitians who came in search of safety are being sent back. Earlier this month, more than 100 people were flown to Cap-Haïtien, the city Joseph once left behind, in the third consecutive weekly deportation flight.

Still, Joseph is doing the opposite of disappearing. She is stepping further into her own light, with the intention of building a career that extends beyond the self – and to use her ascent to create possibilities for the community she comes from.

“I had to loose everything, repeatedly. Tragically. Triumphantly. – Showing up daily is the only answer to closed doors,” she says.

It is in these details that the story begins to surface. But for Joseph, it’s merely a snapshot of her journey. “Glimpses” she says, describing her journey across modeling and the performing arts.

That distinction mirrors the tone and meaning of the photographs. The performances, and roles are not endpoints, but glimpses of what she is building toward. In a similar vein, Joseph is never entirely still in Diani’s frame. Her body is sharply defined, signaling a life authored on her own terms. But traces of movement, from the clothes to the lighting, gather around her.

For Joseph, the future is not simply a measure of what she achieves, but of what she makes possible for others. She attributes the journey that brought her here – and the survival that made it possible – to God.

And beyond the ambitions, the photographs, and the rooms still to come, lies the hope of reuniting with her Mother, Poleine; her Father, Edner; and her younger Brother, Edson – whom she has not seen in nine years.
